An Instagram Too Far

Seeing images like these make my stomach somersault and my heartstrings tighten. It absolutely sickens me that there are people like this who claim to be “hunters” in a world that needs drastically preserving due to man’s previous carelessness.

These images of Game Hunter Rebecca Francis have been in the media a lot recently, after comedian and fellow animal lover Ricky Gervais tweeted the images stating “What must’ve happened to you in your life to make you want to kill a beautiful animal and then lie next to it smiling?”

And I think that is the main issue…while Francis has claimed that she killed this giraffe to feed a local village, if this was the sole purpose of the killing, then what is the need to lie down next to the beautiful animal, beaming with happiness as if posing with a trophy, and posting the image online.

Do you see a farmer posing next to every cow that is killed for its meat? No. Because this is done in a sustainable way…surely you post these images because it is rare that you are one of few who kill these beautiful animals.

Now I don’t know the ins and outs of the lives of these “hunters” but I do know that these people pay hundreds of thousands of pounds to murder these animals. So if Francis’s claim of killing the bull giraffe to feed a local village is true, why not use those hundreds of thousands of pounds to feed the village instead, and save some space in your camera, ay Bex?!

In the midst of the backlash that she has recently received, Francis said that she should be allowed to “live life to the fullest”, so why will she not let these beautiful animals do the same? Why do they not get to live their life to the fullest, what on earth gives her the right to stop another creature from living, just to apparently enhance her own entertainment.

As Gervais has very rightly said of these people who claim that what they do is an entertainment sport, “Sport is fair. If hunting was a sport, the animal would have a gun too.”
